The Fund office has just received information that COBRA premiums will be subsidized by the Federal Government under President Obama's stimulus program titled, The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Complete details are not yet available; however, the act states that Assistance Eligible Individuals (people who lose their jobs in certain cases) will be eligible to pay reduced COBRA premiums beginning on or after March 1, 2009, up to a maximum of 9 months.
The Department of Labor (DOL) has been instructed by President Obama to provide details of the COBRA subsidy program to employers and insurance providers on or before March 19, 2009. Once the Fund office receives this information from the DOL, eligible participants will be notified of the revised premiums and who qualifies.
